The second module of the semester focused students on developing skills in scientific writing. Students were tasked with researching and writing an individual paper on how the process of DNA Barcoding can be used to identify unknown organisms. This project took them through the steps of: performing background research, writing an introduction and research question, performing experimentation, writing results, and how to discuss those results in a scientific way. The basic laboratory concepts they learned through writing this paper were: DNA isolation and purification, DNA amplification through PCR, checking purity of DNA, and sequencing DNA using Sanger Sequencing.
