Biography
Research Interest
My research interests focus on student perception of failure in the teaching laboratory, and especially how the teaching assistant works with students to overcome setbacks during inquiry-based experiments. I am also interested in what language students use to describe their experimental results when the results do not match the expected outcome. Finally, I want to better understand how to convey ecology to students that are mainly considering careers in medical fields.
Field and Laboratory Science: My previous research investigated how increased nutrients in the aquatic system would affect the food source and quality for larval river herring.
Current Projects
Development of a summer STEM course - I am working on the development of a course that will cross ecology, public health, and medicine. I hope this course will allow students to see the connection between the natural world and helping patients in their future careers.
Defining Failure based on different results in inquiry-based experiments - I am defining experimental failure in inquiry-based experiments and determining both in theory and practice how graduate teaching assistants work with students to overcome these setbacks. I am also investigating how students define experimental failure based on different experimental outcomes.
