Delaware Department of Education - Math and Science Partnership

Our 2017 Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) Mathematics Science Partnership (MSP) workshop entitled “DISCovery: The Discover Delaware Interdisciplinary STEM Citizen Science Project” primary purpose is to expand on the success of our previous MSP funded project (December 2013 - June 2016): “Practicing the STEM Practices in an Interdisciplinary Laboratory Setting.” Over the past 3 years, UD’s Interdisciplinary Science Learning Laboratories (ISLL) and the Professional Development Center for Educators (PDCE) have partnered with local DE high school math and science teachers to develop interdisciplinary STEM lessons plans that meet the national Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

​Using a four phase system throughout the year, high school educator teams learn, design, test and refine interdisciplinary STEM lesson plans:

• Learn​​: (Winter) Local DE area teaching teams are invited to UD’s ISLL for a Winter Workshop to learn new tech​niques, interdisciplinary lesson plans, and begin to design their own lesson plans for implementation in the classroom.​
  
• Design: (Spring) Interdisciplinary teaching teams continue to develop and design their lesson plans throughout the school year.
  
• Test: (Summer) Secondary students are invited from the local DE schools to participate in a one week Summer Academy at UD’s ISLL. Here local interdisciplinary teaching teams return to implement, begin to refine, and collaborate with UD’s professional development providers to fine tune their curriculum.
  
• ​Refine: (Fall) Based on their findings from the Summer Academy, interdisciplinary teaching teams implement these lessons in the classroom and continue to refine them.

Summer Academy: June 19^th - 23^rd

The DISCovery Winter 2017 Workshop focuses on developing interdisciplinary STE(A)M (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics)(iSTE(A)M) education teams within and across local Delaware and Pennsylvania high schools. By providing the technology, space, materials, and expertise across disciplines, we are able to foster the development and improvement of sustainable iSTE(A)M education practices within our local high schools.
