Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL)

The UD-CIRTL Program began in the spring 2017 semester.

As a new member institution of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), Delaware's local program aims to provide teaching-related professional development opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows across the University.

In the summer of 2016 the University of Delaware became an official member of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), an international network of over 40 research universities dedicated to the development of a national faculty committed to implementing and advancing effective teaching practices (https://www.cirtl.net/). CIRTL envisions that professional development of current graduate students and postdocs in the scholarship of teaching and learning will enhance the quality of undergraduate education as CIRTL participants’ transition into faculty positions. The UD chapter of CIRTL encourages graduate students, post-docs, preceptors, faculty, and staff from all disciplines throughout the University community to participate in and benefit from local and national CIRTL opportunities.

Under the direction of the co-intuitional leaders Drs. Deborah Allen, Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, and Jacqueline L. Fajardo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, UD’s CIRTL team has spent the last few months raising program awareness around the campus community and planning program specifics in collaboration with several partner institutions including the Faculty Commons, the Center for the Assessment of Teaching and Assessment of Learning (CTAL), Academic Technology Services (ATS) and the Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education (ITUE). After hosting an initial interest meeting at the Faculty Commons in early November and sponsoring discussion groups for graduate students and postdocs at the Winter Faculty Institute in early January, CIRTL is currently open for enrollment and offers participants the opportunity to reach three tiers of accomplishment, including Associate, Practitioner, and Scholar. ​The local CIRTL chapter kicked off the new semester with an organizational meeting at the Faculty Commons on Wednesday February 1st from 12:00-1:30 PM and plans to host monthly “Learning community” meetings in which participants will discuss relevant topics in teaching and learning and share their own teaching experiences.
